Preserving “A Month in the Country” for Film4

Image

The latest restoration project we have done for Film4 and Finishing Post Productions is the 1987 classic film, A Month in the Country. Directed by Pat O’Connor and featuring both Colin Firth’s and Kenneth Branagh’s screen debuts, the story about two WWI veterans is considered a bit of a hidden gem.

A Month in the Country is set during the great British summer of 1920. However, in true British form it was actually shot in really wet weather. This posed a bit of a challenge for Anthony and the restoration team, as they were working with the original negatives from the mid-80s. They had to treat the grain and get the balance between the vibrant colours of summer and the actual conditions right.

We started the processed by creating a new conform because the negatives were A/B roll cut. They also needed stabilising, and the dissolves and fades recreating. We then used our ArriScan to capture a super 2k DPX sequence, and multiple non-destructive restoration tools, including Cinnafilm Dark Energy, to achieve a clean master and treat grain structure. YoYo was then used for a full DATA grade. Finally, we restored the audio to remove the hissing and crackling.

We delivered the HD master back to Film4, and the film is set to air later this year.

A note from Film4’s Kate Robinson: “A Month in the Country is a bit of a forgotten classic with a first-class director and cast. We wanted to bring it back to life and take it to international audiences. It was in need of an upgrade though, so an HD remaster was essential – the result is excellent.”

JCA does the Harlem Shake for Comic Relief

SONY DSCFriday was an unusual day at JCA. We had some special guests hard at work here in Acton – including Simon Cowell, The Pope and Where’s Wally amongst other very famous faces. We admit that Simon Cowell was actually Mark in a mask, The Pope was Sam in disguise, and Wally was our very own Claire, but it was certainly a sight to see the JCA team make such a fantastic fancy dress turn out in support of Red Nose Day. In fact, we thought it was such a spectacle that we decided to do a Harlem Shake. Enjoy and let us know what you think…

You can see photos of the team’s outfits on the JCA Facebook page.

Other Red Nose Day highlights included delicious cup cakes made by Simon, as well as a tasty lunch of chicken and rice courtesy of Diane.

So a big thank you to the Harlem Shakers, the resident chefs and everyone who participated. We have raised £332 and counting in support of this great cause.

Five facts about … TV viewing habits

The future of TV is a hotly debated issue. Linear viewing is still dominant but here at JCA we are delivering to an increasing number of VOD platforms. Second-screening is on the rise, but the TV looks like it’s here to stay. Here are some facts to satisfy your curiosity:

  1. The average UK viewer watched 4 hours, 4 minutes of TV a day in 2012 (BARB)
  2. UK consumers purchased more than 39 million HDTVs last year (DEG)
  3. In 2012 viewers spent 100% more time watching streamed video on tablets and mobile phones than in the previous year (Ooyala)
  4. In the UK in 2012, 89.9% of linear TV was watched live, as it was broadcast (BARB)
  5. VOD accounted for 12 percent of the US consumer movie market in 2012, whilst DVDs and Blu-ray disks remained the largest source accounting for 61% (The NDP Group)

JCA continues to expand with HD boom

HD services are continuing to boom, and here at JCA we are committed to staying ahead of the stampede. We are finding that broadcasters and distributors are increasingly looking for faster turnarounds with more content entering the pipeline, so we have invested and expanded, again!

Our recent £450k investment into HD servicing involved welcoming seven new team members who will focus on account management and operations. Bigger teams mean we can maintain our hands-on approach.

In terms of kit, we have had three unique HDCAM SR decks built as well as invested in CandIT media’s WARP. Finally, despite the rise of digital workflows, we have also invested in a further three file playback devices to satisfy the demand for file to tape services.

2013: Digital, Tape and HD

2012 saw impressive developments across the film and television industry. YouTube and Netflix consolidated their positions in the market, Shine International relocated HQ to London and Sony launched two 4k cameras. But what does 2013 have in store?

  • Digital delivery is only going to get bigger. It maybe stating the obvious, but the amount of clients opting for file-based solutions has risen by around 35%. We expect this to rise further in 2013. We have already invested £600k in new kit to increase capacity so we can satisfy the need.
  • But the demand for tape is still growing too. In fact 2012 saw an approximate rise in demand of 25-30% for tape services at JCA.  Hence we are still continuing to invest and expand our teams and kit to support this.  This doesn’t look to drop either, as certain clients such as football distributors still prefer to use tape in some instances. It is true that one digital workflow process would be easier, but tape still has its advantages and it’s not going to disappear in 2013.
  • With VOD platforms like Netflix really thriving, content owners will be keen to digitise content libraries even further in order to maximise ROI.
  • HD will continue to boom. We have seen a huge surge in the amount of HD content entering our pipeline here at JCA, with additional SD material also coming in for HD remastering. We only expect this to rise.
