Taking Sharpe’s Rifles to HD

The majority of classic content shot on 16mm film now looks dated and old by today’s high definition standards. But content/rights owners can maximise these assets by restoring and re-mastering them for digital distribution.

We have worked with ITV Global Entertainment on various restoration projects, including classic series Sharpe’s Rifles and Poirot. ITV commissioned JCA to digitally re-master the 1993 hit show, Sharpe’s Rifles, for HD broadcast and Blu-ray DVD release. Staring Sean Bean, Sharpe’s Rifles is the first of the Sharpe television dramas about a British sergeant in the Peninsular War.

JCA was briefed to restore and enhance the 1993 “original negatives” for HD viewing. Originally shot on Super 16, this process included the complete recreation of post-produced visual effects and subtitles, as well as preparation of the original negatives through scanning, conforming, grading and restoration. Not forgetting to mention the final delivery of the project.

In terms of results, we were able to take the colour deeper whilst removing dirt, scratches and damage. We re-graded the film scene-by-scene with both best-of-breed technologies and hands-on techniques, meaning we could stay true to the original vision of the film-makers.

With the advent of HD formats, many popular classic series now look drab and dated. But they do not have to be kept in the content attic; they can be restored to their former glory. Content owners such as ITV Global Entertainment are increasingly unlocking these hidden treasures and public nostalgia along with it, all using content they already possess.

Remastering The Queen’s coronation in HD

JCA has digitally remastered A Queen is Crowned for ITV Studios Global Entertainment. The Oscar-nominated and BAFTA award-winning film is the only feature-length Technicolor record of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. Narrated by Laurence Olivier, it conveys the sights, sounds and spirit of the historic day in 1953.

We were tasked with digitally restoring the documentary from available film elements. We scanned the negatives to super 2k resolution in order for our restoration artists, headed up by Anthony Badger, to fully repair and remaster the content, creating a high definition master.

The original film was shot in three-strip Technicolor, which presented the restoration team with a unique challenge. Varying from frame to frame, colour misregistration was a recurrent issue and needed to be addressed and corrected with rigorous attention to detail.

Having previously restored Poirot and Sharpe’s Rifles for ITV Studios Global Entertainment, they knew JCA would relish the challenge of bringing this historic documentary digitally up-to-date.

A Queen is Crowned will be available on Blu-ray in 2012, ensuring this regal event can be relived again and again in glistening HD quality.

JCA Rapids at the Broadcast Fives

'Broadcast Fives', JCA

The sun made a welcome appearance at the annual Broadcast Fives football tournament last weekend with the JCA Rapids, consisting of Perry, Graham, Patrick, Mark, Charlie, Carl, Jack, Harry, Dave and Paul, dusting off their boots ready for action.

In the group stage the JCA Rapids played four games. Winning against the Broadcast Bandits (3-1), they were in with a chance of progressing. Unfortunately the three losses that followed did not put them on the most promising footing. Suffering a further 2-0 defeat against All 3 Media, the tournament was over for the team this year.

It was a great performance by the boys, with the scores not nearly reflecting the run of play. The team will be working on their finishing touch to make sure the opposition’s net bulges more frequently next year. It must be said that Graham ‘The Cat’ Davies was on great form, whilst everyone else played well too, and Jack was Man of the Match in the game they won.

The JCA Rapids are already looking forward to Broadcast Fives 2013. Bring it on!

The Digital Resurrection of Poirot

Poirot after restoration

Poirot is an iconic and timeless series adapted from the novels of one of the greatest crime writers, Agatha Christie. The famous Belgian Detective Hercule Poirot, famously portrayed by David Suchet, has solved some of the greatest fictional crimes ever seen on the big and small screens including Murder on the Orient Express, The ABC Murders and Death on the Nile. But it was JCA that was sought out to digitally restore his increasingly dated image.

Poirot was first produced on 16mm film in 1989 and was watched and enjoyed by millions. Since the original series, the production industry has advanced in leaps and bounds rendering the once advanced and cutting edge footage dated and out of touch.

It was in 2010 that JCA was tasked with the digital restoration and remastering of the 16mm film edits by ITV. The challenge was to restore and re-grade 50 episodes as HDCAM SR masters for HD transmission, taking the quality of the footage up a level as ITV sought to increase its HD content.

Using an ARRISCAN film scanner JCA was able to bring the content back to life. By restoring and encoding the film to an HD format, Poirot has hit screens with sharp grading and a new vibrant image. The ARRISCAN’s ability to run seven frames a second on a pin registered system enabled JCA to complete three 50 minute episodes in just a few days – quick results, just like Hercule Poirot himself.

Since the completion of the work the series has aired on ITV and is available via ITV Player to the delight of fans. And it’s not just the stories that have garnered praise. The film restoration work itself has received positive reviews from the likes of blu-ray.com, DVDTalk and HomeTheaterForum.

JCA was delighted to be involved in this project of resurrecting one of the most iconic detective figures, bringing Hercule Poirot into the 21st Century.

The Hour (Shine International)

Following the launch of our international partner program earlier this year, which saw us collaborate with London-based SMV Complete Media, we are thrilled to have started work with Shine international, the sales and distribution arm of Shine Group. Shine International is a leader in handling global rights to television formats and is responsible for the distribution of more than 3,000 hours of broadcast content annually.

We look forward to working with Shine International and helping it reach its business objectives by efficiently and effectively supplying it with services that will fully support its global reach.

An Excellent Expo

JCA descended on Earls Court last week for the annual Broadcast Video Expo, the UK event for those working in production, post and delivery. As always, the event was thriving with industry professionals and familiar faces from all areas, from acquisition and distribution, through to post and delivery, all looking to touch, test and compare the latest products and services available.

Matt Bowman, Commercial Director at JCA and Melanie Dayasena-Lowe, Deputy Editor at TVBEurope

As a digital services specialist, JCA was delighted that digital really did dominate this year’s Expo. With so much recent development in the digital convergence and media asset management space, we were really looking forward to hearingfrom other industry experts on tapeless workflows. Special attention went to Mark Harrison, Controller of BBC North, who gave a talk on ‘Tapeless – is it worth the trouble’. At JCA, we believe digital workflows are the future. Not only does a digital workflow save time, it is a far more cost-effective andefficient solution. You can read our thoughts on this in an earlier JCA blog post – Tape: past, present and future.

JCA’s Matt Bowman also caught up with Melanie Dayasena-Lowe, Deputy Editor at TVBEurope, to discuss the latest developments in the digital world. From film restoration to grading, infrared to black and white, we delved into the world of JCA and what we do best.

All in all it was an excellent few days in which we were able to offer our expertise and thoughts to those that wanted it! Hope to see you all again next year at Excel…

JCA launches international partner program

2011 was a busy year for JCA, and we are increasingly working with clients of a global nature and so have launched an international partner program. To kick it off we have formed a transatlantic partnership with LA-based SMV Complete Media, an integrated media management services provider. The joint venture will allow global clients access to local service centres in LA and London for both tape and file-based solutions.

Media companies are increasingly adopting digital workflows, meaning content can be zipped around the world more easily than ever before. Now laborious courier costs and stressful time delays can be avoided in favour of a flexible, digital solution. At JCA we still see the importance of being able to offer global clients local services around the world. Therefore, by forming alliances with companies that hold a similar business philosophy, such as SMV Complete Media, we can ensure that our clients get quality and flexible media solutions with a personal touch and fast turn-around.

This transatlantic partnership is a strategic move by JCA to support international clients based in industry hubs such as LA and other cities along the west coast of America. We are excited about forming similar alliances across Europe, Australia, the Far East and the East Coast of America this year.
